Founded in 1898, deuter is one of the world’s leading backpack brands and has pioneered premium outdoor gear for more than 120 years.

The German company also has a very inspiring sustainable philosophy. From the way they select materials for their products that maintain the balance between eco-friendly and durable, to the corporate social responsibility they demonstrate with their employees and more. We were able to experience this by visiting their headquarters with the DAN Europe Sustainable Tour.

We want to highlight the product repair service that they offer to all their customers, since for our planet (and even for our wallets) we all know that it is better to repair than to throw away.

WITH NEEDLE AND THREAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Who doesn’t know the classics among the signs of wear? A provisionally attached paper clip as a zipper replacement, a “lovingly patched” tear in the pack, which eats itself despite armor tape constantly or the small hole in the outer material of your sleeping bag, which competes with Mrs. Holle in terms of “amount of snow”. These and other damages do not make your product worthless, because they can be repaired!

So if your deuter product should ever get into trouble and urgently need a repair that you can not do yourself, they’ll be very happy to help you. They care to make the product life cycle as long as possible and thus reduce the ecological footprint of their products. For that reason they put a lot of emphasis on timeless design, sustainable materials and seamless high quality along the manufacturing process. And they also repair!

This reflects responsibility towards our environment and also the customers.

Long-term durability is extremely important for deuter. By extending the life cycle of deuter’s products, they also contribute to conserving resources. This has been a tradition at deuter: they qualified specialists have been carrying out repairs on-site at deuter for 120 years.

But that is not all. They are also working hard to make the new products more sustainable!

THE NEW UP SERIES BRINGS TOGETHER LIFE IN THE CITY WITH THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

It has all the functionality you want in an urban pack but is produced in a resource-efficient way, so you can make your commute with a clear conscience. This is primarily because the UP series is made from recycled materials – 37x 0.5-litre PET bottles to be precise. The textile manufacturing process is carried out according to the stringent bluesign® standard. And secondly, the amount of water and crude oil used is significantly reduced.

MADE FROM REMNANTS

For the Infiniti series, they use remnants fabric from their production line that is 100% functional. This surplus fabric, which would otherwise go to waste, is turned into a series of bags and packs, thereby reducing the ecological footprint of their production.

There are variations between the individual products in terms of the way these fabrics are applied, the surface area that is used and their aesthetics. But all fabrics are tested for functionality to ensure the end product is of a consistently high standard!

The best part? People are at the centre of deuter’s activities – whether as employees, customers, business partners or shareholders. So you can rest easy knowing that all workers in their production factories are treated fairly.

FAIR PRODUCTION

We all want it: to live in a better world. In a fairer world.

Wouldn’t it be nice to know that everyone who works on a deuter product earns a living wage? Wouldn’t it be nice to know that important social labour standards are respected in the production of your new deuter backpack?

More and more buyers are rightly demanding fair conditions in production and trade. deuter has been a member of the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) since 2011 and has been consistently awarded FWF Leader status since 2013. Their goal: socially just and environmentally friendly, sustainable production conditions.

In addition, deuter’s headquarters building, acquired in 2012, meets high environmental standards. The company lives this sustainable philosophy from the inside out.

A great example of how a business can use its power to do good!
